Sikkim
Lachung is a city and hill station in northeast Sikkim, India. It is located in the North Sikkim district near the border of Tibet. Lachung is at an altitude of about 9,600 feet (2,900 m) and is both tributaries of the Teesta River, at the confluence of the Lachen and Lachung rivers. The word Lachung means "small pass." The city is about 125 kilometers (78 mi) from the capital Gangtok.
The Indian Army has a frontward base in the city. Before the Chinese capture of Tibet in 1950, Lachung was a trading post between Sikkim and Tibet, after which it was closed. The city's economy has been boost by tourism in recent years as the region has been opened by the Government of India. Tourists visit the city between October and May, mostly on the way to the Yamthang Valley and Lachung Monastery. Most residents of Lachung are of Lepcha and Tibetan descent. The languages spoken here are Lepcha, Nepali, and Bhutia. The city usually covered in snow during winter. Lachung is also the base camp of the Rhododendron Valley Trek, which starts from Yumthang Valley and ends at Lachen Valley.
British explorer Joseph Dalton Hooker describes Lachung in his definitive, The Himalayan Journal (1855) as "the most beautiful village in Sikkim." Skiing is done in Phuni near the town.
The most excellent time to visit Lachung is from June to October. As mountains border Lachung, the weather remains pleasant throughout the year. The average temperature ranges between 10 ° C and 16 ° C from October to June. In the summer from March to May, it is quite pleasant. Rhododendron flowers are in full bloom and contribute to the beauty of Lachung. Winters, which begin in October and last until February, is quite cold. During this time, the mountains covered with snow. Despite the winters being so cold, visiting during these months is a good option, as the sights here are breathtaking.

The people of Lachung mainly follow Buddhism. The rest follow Hinduism. The ancestors of the people of Lachung can be traced to Bhutias, Lepchas, and Tibetans. The people of Lachung speak a wide range of languages. Languages spoken include Nepali, Bhutia, Lepcha, Limbu, Newari, Rai, Gurung, Mangar, Sherpa, Tamang, and Sunwar. While some speak Hindi, English is also less spoken here.
The customs of the people of Sikkim are an assortment of different traditions that depend to a large extent on the various communities living in the province. Folk dances are an essential part of the culture of the people of Lachung, and they exist to celebrate life. Folk dances, usually performed during festivals, fully represent various aspects of the region's culture as they play popular musical instruments of the area with dancers in traditional costumes accompanied by classic songs.
